Malone Messenger

News for members of the Malone University family

Welcome to the Malone Messenger! I hope you will enjoy the updates from the Malone campus presented in this new format. We are returning to a tradition from our past with this issue but focusing the content on the many ways we are continuing to fulfill our mission and produce servant leaders for our world for the 21st century.

With the spread of the Coronavirus to Ohio, much of our time over the past couple of months has been spent adapting our instruction and operations and making decisions to provide for the safety and security of our community. Like all colleges, we were forced to move to remote instruction and remote working. You can be proud of the way we have adapted to the online learning platform and continued to care for and support our students’ transformative experiences, albeit in a different format.

As I write to you, we are celebrating a new group of Malone graduates who are launching to make their mark in the world. While we can’t recognize our new alumni in the typical fashion, we are making the most of technology, social media, and other innovative ways to share our pride and demonstrate our love for our graduates. In this uncertain time, we will continue to move forward with caution and regard for our safety but also with confidence about our future. As Pioneers, our orientation is perseverance toward our objective. We lead. We are continuing to develop new academic programs to meet the needs of our churches, communities, and the world. Programs such as Data Analytics, Professional Writing and Editing, and Digital Media are market-facing and produce graduates who can make a difference in the career path of their choosing.

Our new Pendle Hill Pledge guarantees that all Malone students will be engaged in a campus-wide effort to help them understand who they are meant to be and how their career paths connect to their God-given gifts, their sense of purpose, and their callings. This program, launched earlier this spring, is the result of hard work and innovative thinking on the part of our extraordinary faculty. Malone students will graduate knowing they are prepared for life and work in a rapidly-changing world. Our world needs more Christian leaders like those produced here at Malone.

Among our many sources of hope, I find encouragement in Moses words to Joshua;

“It is the Lord who goes before [us]. He will be with [us]; He will not fail [us] or forsake us. Do not fear of be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31: 8)

Here at Malone, we are Staying Pioneer Strong. I pray that you are as well.

With appreciation for your partnership in stewarding Malone University,

David King, Ed.D., President

Pardon our dust: Center for Student Success highlights ongoing campus improvements

Several campus renovation projects have recently been completed or are underway. Support from the Timken Foundation is providing a significant renovation in the Cattell Library. Renovated space will be home of the Center for Student Success (pictured). The Bailey Room was also renovated to create a 24-hour, swipe accessible, solitary study space. Additional renovation projects brought about enhancements in the Brehme Centennial Center at the site of the former Froggy’s Café which is now designed as a multi-functional lounge, and Emma’s Café in The Barn which now features coffee, wraps, and other refreshments.

Jennifer Webb appointed chair of Department of Education

Jennifer Webb has been named Chair of the Department of Education. She brings a wealth of experience in higher education. Before being appointed, Webb served Malone by reviewing and updating all accreditation program requirements. Additionally, Webb is currently the chair of the board for Lighthouse Ministries and serves Ohio as the chair of the Council for Exceptional Children.

University Chorale’s uplifting performances shared throughout the state

While safety precautions put in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus separated members of the Malone community during much of the spring, Associate Professor of Music Jon Peterson and students in the Malone Chorale used technology to sing together and produce three uplifting performances. Using individual video submissions, the Chorale took social distancing and turned it into Social Distance-Sing! The performances were shared widely through Malone social media platforms and were featured in one of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s daily press conferences. You can watch the videos on Malone’s YouTube page.

Pendle Hill Pledge launched in January

The Pendle Hill Pledge is a campus-wide focus on career development and personalized mentorship, which helps students discover who they are meant to be and how their career can be a part of a purposeful and meaningful life. Every student will have at least four vocationally-focused educational experiences: career-focused personality inventories, one-on-one mentoring with faculty, education in the practical skills of job-seeking, and internship, service-learning, or major research project opportunities.

New academic programs developed to serve the needs of a changing world

Under the leadership of Provost Greg Miller, Malone continues to develop new academic programs that are market-facing and aligned with the mission of the University. Programs launched recently include Cybersecurity, Chemical Dependency Counseling, Data Analytics, Professional Writing and Editing, Digital Media, and Spanish for Service and the Professions.

“Our process is one of constant assessment of our academic offerings,” said President David King. “New programs will be distinctively Malone and measured against the investment required and their ability to attract and retain students. We are working with partners at the community, state, and national levels to develop programs that produce graduates who are servant leaders and prepared for service in emerging sectors of the world economy.”
