Malone University to host Wordstock: A Celebration of Poetry & Prose; Scholarships offered to writing competition winners
High School students will be offered the opportunity to compete for one of four $1,000 Creative Writing Fellowships
The Malone English Department will host Wordstock, a day-long event for high school students that will consist of writing games, craft talks by Creative Writing Faculty, an open mic reading, and poetry and prose competitions, on April 7 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The event will be held in the Randall Campus Center Stewart Room. Admission is free for high school students and their chaperones, and each attendee will receive a free lunch.
Students are encouraged to bring their laptops to compete in the poetry and prose competitions. Winners of each competition will receive $100, while second place will receive $50. In addition, all four winners will be offered a $1,000 Creative Writing Fellowship should they choose to attend Malone.
In the afternoon, two Malone faculty will give craft talks about writing: Jaclyn Dwyer Stephens, Ph.D., Director of Creative Writing will speak about fiction, and Rob Stephens, Ph.D. will speak about poetry.
All high school students are welcome to participate in the Open Mic reading. Interested students should bring a piece of original work to read for up to five minutes.
