Scope of Services
Malone University’s Counseling Center is committed to provide counseling services to our students in a safe, caring, and professional manner. The Counseling Center will offer short-term counseling services to students to address common issues experienced during the college experience. There is no set limit to the number of services; however, if a student needs longer-term and/or specialized treatment, the counselor will work with the student to find the appropriate counseling services and resources within the community.
Some examples of common issues addressed in short-term counseling at the Counseling Center are:
- Academic Performance Concerns
- Vocational/Career Issues
- Relationship Problems
- Adjustment Issues
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Anger Management
- Grief/Loss Issues
- Spiritual Concerns
- Health and Wellness Issues
The following issues may involve a referral to services outside of the Counseling Center:
The need for weekly, long-term counseling, as indicated by:
- A history of psychiatric concerns, including one or more of the following:
- Multiple hospitalizations
- Several suicidal behaviors and/or attempts
- Unmanaged psychotic symptoms
- Instances in which short-term counseling may be harmful or not beneficial
- Need for on-going medication management for mental health disorders, such as Attention-Deficit Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, etc.
A few examples of students who need specialized treatment approaches that are not provided by our counselors at the Counseling Center are:
- Chronic and significant substance abuse issues that are impairing current functioning
- Presence of a significant and/or chronic eating disorder that has not previously been treated and/or has the potential to impact the health and welfare of the individual
