Co-Curricular Programs

Learn while doing. Act in a play. Sing in a musical. Write a story. Make a film for the Open Frame Film Festival. Our department offers opportunities for you to explore your career interests and give you hands-on experience.

Open Frame Film Festival

The Open Frame is a festival that screens one night of films to an audience of hundreds. It also is a film development program that helps students move through the production process just as professionals do.

Since 2002, our students have made hundreds of films — working hard as producers, writers, directors, technicians, actors, and artists.

Theatre

At a larger university, students may go their entire academic careers without having the chance to actually participate in the production of a play — not at Malone! All students, regardless of their majors, are encouraged to participate in the Theatre at Malone University program.

Two major productions a year mean that everyone can contribute to the excitement of the stage. Other opportunities include:

  • 24-Hour Theatre
  • Fall Shorts Festival
  • 10-Minute Play Festival
  • Improv comedy
  • Student productions

First Company

First Company is a designated section of Applied Drama in which experienced students mentor first-semester students who are interested in participating in theatre.

Alpha Psi Omega

Alpha Psi Omega (APO) is Malone’s Theatre honor society. APO seeks to help Malone students who are interested in theatre reach high accomplishments. The group sponsors a number of student-directed productions and projects each semester, including one-act plays, playwright festivals, and musical revues. Students also have the opportunity to complete a senior showcase where they may choose to write, direct, design, or act in a production of their choice.

24-Hour Theatre

Audition actors, write five plays, practice them, create sets, and perform the finished project in just 24 hours? 24-Hour Theatre is a hallmark of the Theatre program at Malone. The constraints of this unique opportunity teach some of the best aspects of theatre — collaboration, improvisation, and creativity!
