Visiting Instructor of Music

Starting Date: August 2023

The Department of Music at Malone University seeks a collaborative and inspiring choral music artist/educator to serve as the Director of Choral Activities. The ideal candidate will possess the requisite musical experience to lead and further enhance an established collegiate choral music program. Responsibilities:

  • The normal teaching load is 12 credits per semester.
  • Direct the Malone University Chorale, and auditioned 35-voice choir that performs on-and off-campus, including our annual Christmas at Malone concerts, as well as annual spring tours, both domestic and international.
  • Direct the Malone University Chamber Choir (Amplified) a select ensemble of 8-12 voices.
  • Teach undergraduate courses in related areas as determined by qualifications and department needs.
  • Advise and mentor music majors (B.A. Music and B.S.E. Music Education) and work with the Department of Education to facilitate music education field work and student teaching.
  • Oversee OCMEA, the Malone University Alumni Choir and Preparatory Program.
  • Serve as Voice Area Coordinator and Recital Coordinator.
  • Recruit Malone University students of all academic majors, who are interested in a choral ensemble experience.
  • Engage in music specific research/scholarship.
  • Serve on music unit and institutional committee.
  • With assistance from administrative assistant to the music department, coordinate music audition and ensemble participate award letters or contractual obligations to prospective scholarship recipients

oversight

  • Prepare annual course schedules and program/departmental teaching loads.
  • Prepare and monitor annual budget including funds from grants and appropriations
  • Update catalog information 
  • Lead and coordinate program and accreditation reviews
  • Foster good teaching and advise faculty on teaching methodologies
  • Coordinate department business meetings, events and chapels
  • Cooperate with Registrar’s office in evaluation of transcripts for transfer students
  • Coordinate advising/mentoring of students by faculty including arrangements with the Center for Student Success
  • Lead department faculty searches
  • Coordinate the recruitment and onboarding of adjunct faculty
  • Respond to student inquiries and concerns regarding course and faculty issues
  • Promote and encourage faculty development
  • Coordinate student learning assessment reviews and reporting for program effectiveness
  • Cooperate with other departments/programs in the development of interdisciplinary programs, accreditation responses (NCATE, HLC, NASM, CACREP, CCNE, CSWE, ACBSP), and specialized licensures
  • Monitor and edit the department website
  • Assist in the development of new programs and initiatives in consultation with the Provost
  • Coordinate departmental Pendle Hill activities and initiatives
  • Coordinate departmental contributions to the fulfillment of annual strategic initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with music office staff to facilitate applied music, performance, and academic aspects of departmental work.

evaluation

  • Observe departmental faculty teaching when appropriate
  • Review and give feedback to faculty regarding teaching evaluations as appropriate
  • Make recommendations regarding promotion, tenure and professional development
  • Serve as the departmental evaluator in case of student appeals to the department
  • Conduct annual review of adjunct faculty teaching effectiveness
  • Conduct annual review of staff employees

representation

  • Represent the department/program on school and university committees
  • Work with the Director of Library Services in the ordering of books and other
    instructional materials
  • Coordinate representation of faculty at recruitment events
  • Make recommendations to the Provost concerning strategic and long-range planning

qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate (D.M.A., Ed.D., or Ph.D.) preferred; well-qualified ABDs considered.
  • Teaching licensure preferred
  • Able to demonstrate evidence of strong professional activity, including solo and collaborative performances.
  • Deep personal commitment to Jesus Christ and an understanding of and commitment to the integration of faith and learning in the academic discipline.
  • Commitment to teaching within an undergraduate music program.
  • A disposition toward service to the department and university.

About the Department of Music:

The Department of Music provides students with the opportunity to pursue the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and the Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. A significant number of students from all degree programs are involved in music performance ensembles and private music instruction. The 2,240 square foot Murray Choral Rehearsal room is located in the renovated Johnson Center for Worship and the Fine Arts and is the designated rehearsal space for choral music. Our music programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
